The reinstatement application process is different for former students returning and continuing students. Rule 38: Academic Probation and Recess for At-risk Students
(a) Undergraduate students whose semester (excluding summer session) or cumulative GPA drops below a 2.0 for the first time must apply for reinstatement to continue their enrollment at Washington State University. Students are placed on probation after reinstatement. Certified majors on academic probation may be decertified by the academic department.
(b) First-time, first-year undergraduate students are recessed from the university after their first term of enrollment if their semester GPA is below 1.0. Individuals are recessed from the university for one full semester (fall or spring).
Effective Fall 2024, students under Rule 38b have the right to appeal the decision.

Reinstatement process for Rule 38a
- Complete a reinstatement application and online modules through Canvas.
- Courses for the next semester (excluding summer) will be canceled if an application has not been received and approved by the listed deadline.
Reinstatement process for Rule 38b
- Students will be recessed and courses for the next semester will be canceled. There is no early reinstatement process.
- Students who are recessed are required to remain out of WSU for one semester (not including summer session).
- Recessed students are not eligible and cannot seek non-degree student status.
- Students with extraordinary circumstances that interfered with their ability to be successful may appeal the decision.
Rule 39: Undergraduate Academic Deficiency
Undergraduate students are dismissed from the University after the third semester (excluding summer session) in which the cumulative grade point average is below 2.0. Individuals who are dismissed from the University may not enroll in courses at WSU for two full academic semesters. Dismissed individuals will also not be able to seek status as a ‘non-degree seeking student.’

Reinstatement process for Rule 38b
- Students will be dismissed and courses for the next semester (excluding summer IF already enrolled before grades are posted) will be canceled. There is no early reinstatement process.
- Students who are dismissed are required to remain out of WSU for two consecutive semesters.
- Dismissed students are not eligible and cannot seek non-degree student status.
- Students with extraordinary circumstances that interfered with their ability to be successful may appeal the decision.
Former Students Returning
Reinstatement process for former students returning
Former students returning have been away from WSU for two or more semesters.
- Complete the application for admissions as a Former Student Returning.
- Complete a reinstatement application form, including a personal statement.
- Your advisor will submit the necessary documents to the Reinstatement team. The team will process your reinstatement within 1-2 business days after receiving them, allowing you to return for the next academic term.
Reinstatement conditions
After you have been reinstated, the reinstatement team will assign reinstatement conditions.
You will receive an email on or before the start of the fall semester from van.reinstatement@wsu.edu outlining your fall 2025 reinstatement conditions and next steps.
Be sure to check your WSU email for your assigned reinstatement conditions and schedule a reinstatement appointment with your academic advisor by September 1.
WSU Vancouver charges a $50.00 reinstatement fee. This fee is not due upon application. This fee will be posted to your student account during the fall 2025 semester.
Important Note: If you will not be able to successfully complete your assigned reinstatement conditions by the deadline, please reach out to your academic advisor immediately or email the reinstatement team at van.reinstatement@wsu.edu. Incomplete reinstatement conditions may result in a delay or inability for you to enroll in the next semester.
Academic reinstatement application and guidelines
Reinstatement guidelines (current students only)
To apply for academic reinstatement, complete an online application and set of modules through Canvas. You will have received an email from Vancouver Reinstatement (van.reinstatement@wsu.edu) with a link to the Canvas modules. Didn’t receive the email? Email Vancouver Reinstatement.
Current student reinstatement application process:
- Check your myWSU email for your Canvas modules link.
- Complete the online application and modules through Canvas by the reinstatement deadline.
- Once the modules and application are complete, your deficiency hold will be removed, and you will be given a set of reinstatement conditions to complete for the semester. Note: failure to complete these conditions by the deadline may result in an enrollment hold for the following semester.
Reinstatement application form (former students returning only)
To apply for academic reinstatement, complete the application form that follows. When complete, print your application, attach your Personal Statement and any supporting documentation, and either hand deliver or email these materials to your advisor at least 2 days prior to your reinstatement interview.
- Applications will not be accepted in the mail via United States Postal Service.
- Review the application form for additional instructions and information.
Your reinstatement application process will be the following:
- Complete the Former student Reinstatement Application (PDF).
- Write a personal statement. Your statement should go over reasons for your deficiency the last semester you were enrolled, what you have done during your time away to prepare for returning to WSU Vancouver, and your strategies for success upon returning.
- Meet with your academic advisor for a reinstatement appointment and review. Email your reinstatement application along with your personal statement to your advisor 24 hours in advance of your interview so that you and your advisor can go over it together when you meet.
At the end of your reinstatement appointment, you will find out if you have been reinstated to WSU Vancouver. If reinstated, your academic advisor will work with you on next steps, including selecting your classes, preparing to register if you have not done so already and completing any other to-do items.
Change of campus
- Students who were enrolled and deficient at another WSU campus in the last two semesters and are now are now seeking reinstatement at WSU Vancouver must complete the Change of Campus Form.
- If reinstatement is approved, the Change of Campus form will be processed, allowing the student to register at WSU Vancouver.
After the decision
- Read the information sent to you carefully.
- If you are reinstated, be sure to follow the conditions carefully.
- If you are denied reinstatement, be sure to consider the recommendations carefully if you plan to reapply for reinstatement.
