This resource-focused graduate program prepares dedicated professionals to step into high-impact administrative roles through comprehensive coursework and hands-on field experience.

Designed for educators aiming to make a lasting difference, the curriculum blends theoretical knowledge with practical administrative training. Candidates gain deep insights into instructional leadership, community communication, and educational law while meeting rigorous state standards.

Program Requirements and Framework

The Department of Educational Leadership and Sport Management offers a rigorous certification pathway requiring successful completion of six courses alongside a year-long administrative internship, totaling 24 credits.

Required coursework includes:

  • ED_AD 509 Leading School Improvement

  • ED_AD 583 Community and Communications
  • ED_AD 585 Financial Management in Education
  • ED_AD 588 The Law and Education

Candidates must hold three years of successful experience with a regular Teaching, Educational Staff Associate, or Career and Technical Educator certificate. A master’s degree in any field is also required before an administrator certificate can be issued. Those who do not hold a master’s degree can enroll in a combined pathway at WSU that pairs the administrator certificate with a Master of Education in Educational Leadership for 41 total credits. To complete the degree, the master’s degree requires an additional 17 credits consisting of five classes and a final take-home comprehensive written exam.

Plan Your Educational Leadership Degree

Navigating administrator certification requires careful alignment of coursework, district experience, and leadership internship placements. Whether you are balancing local school responsibilities, evaluating the accelerated track, or combining your certificate with a Master of Education, professional guidance ensures a direct path toward graduation and state credentialing.

Academic Timelines and Pathways

Students pursuing certification alone can choose from three distinct scheduling options tailored to professional experience and pacing needs:

  • Standard Pathway: A three-year track allowing ample time to cultivate leadership skills before transitioning into an administrative role. Students take two courses per term during the first period, one course per term during the second period, and complete the internship in the final period.
  • Accelerated Pathway: A two-year track designed for students with substantial leadership experience who may already serve as a Dean of Students or Associate Administrator. Coursework is completed alongside the internship in the final period.
  • Extended Pathway: A track extending beyond three years for individuals balancing complex professional duties or waiting on district internship placements. This schedule is fully customized under advisor guidance.

The combined certification and master’s degree track spans three years, utilizing year-round coursework to fulfill both credential and degree objectives.
