Your first year at WSU Vancouver is an opportunity to try new things, meet people and discover what interests you.
New Coug Learning Communities bring together first-year students pursuing similar majors or degree programs, so you can learn alongside your classmates, build skills for college and get to know others as you work toward your academic goals.
What you’ll experience
- An Academic Advisor who helps you understand college expectations, develop academic skills and find campus resources.
- A peer student leader in their junior or senior year who shares advice, answers questions and offers tips from their own college experience.
- A small group of students with similar academic interests who learn alongside you throughout your first year.
Find your New Coug Learning Community
You’ll be placed in a Learning Community based on your declared major. Find your major to see which group you’ll join and its academic advisor. Still deciding on a major? Choose the Learning Community that best matches your academic interests.
Before the semester begins, an academic advisor will email you with more information. In the meantime, you can email the advisor for your group with any questions.
Activities beyond the classroom
Need a break from classes? First-Year Fridays are a fun way to spend time with your classmates outside the classroom, try something new and unwind.
These monthly activities include movie nights, scavenger hunts, bingo, arts and crafts, and wellness activities.
Courses you’ll take
As part of your Learning Community, you’ll take UNIV 104 in the fall and UNIV 204 in the spring. Both courses are taught by an academic advisor.
- UNIV 104 helps you build study skills, manage your time, set goals and find campus resources.
- UNIV 204 helps you explore majors and career paths, identify your interests and strengths, and plan for your future.
