VA Education Benefits FAQ
Who do I contact about payment concerns?
For CH 1606, 33, 30, or 35, contact the VA at 1-888-442-4551. For CH 31, contact your VR&E counselor directly.
How can I find my remaining months of eligibility?
Log in to your eBenefits account or call the VA Education hotline.
When will I be paid my monthly stipend?
The VA typically pays on the first of the month for the previous month. Payments are prorated for partial months (August, December, January, and May).
New Students: Complete an Information Sheet and provide your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) and DD214 to the Veterans Coordinator.
Enrollment Certification Request: Submit this form each semester before classes start. This alerts the office to certify your enrollment so you receive your stipends.
Declaring a Major: The VA requires you to declare a major by the time you reach 60 credit hours. Use form 22-1995 to report changes.
Tuition Waivers: Washington residents with an Honorable discharge may receive a 50% waiver. Spouses/children of 100% disabled or deceased veterans may be eligible for a 100% waiver. See Waiver Applications.
Non-Resident Tuition: As of August 2021, most beneficiaries are eligible for in-state rates. Submit the Military Residency Form to ensure correct billing.
Financial Aid: You can use both! Grants and scholarships are “free” money that can cover costs the VA doesn’t. If your income has changed since leaving the military, file a Special Circumstance Appeal.
STEM Scholarship: The Rogers STEM Scholarship provides up to 9 months ($30,000) of extra benefits for students in approved fields.
Study Abroad: The GI Bill® only covers study abroad if it is explicitly required for your degree. It does not cover travel or application fees.
MHA Eligibility: For CH 33, you must be enrolled in at least 7 credits for fall/spring to receive MHA. Online-only schedules receive a significantly lower rate than on-campus/hybrid schedules.
Monthly Verification: CH 33 students must verify enrollment each month via text or email. Failure to do so for two consecutive months will stop your housing payments. Learn how to verify here.
Reporting Changes: Always notify the Veterans Coordinator if you add or drop a class. Even if credit totals don’t change, course fees might.
Attendance: You must attend class to receive benefits. Federal law requires us to report non-attendance, which can result in an overpayment the VA will require you to pay back.
