VA Work Study Opportunities

If you are using VA educational benefits and are enrolled at least three-quarter time (9+ credits), you may be eligible for the VA Work Study program. This is an excellent way to earn extra income while supporting your fellow veterans.

Program Benefits

  • Flexible Hours: Schedules are designed to work around your academic commitments.
  • Tax-Exempt Income: Your work-study allowance is not subject to federal or state taxes.
  • Professional Experience: Gain meaningful job experience and build your resume for future employment.
  • Networking: Connect with professionals and other veterans in your community.

Locations and Pay

Opportunities are available at the WSU Vancouver Veterans & Military Affiliated Student (VMAS) Services office, as well as several federal sites in the Vancouver and Portland areas.

  • Pay Rate: You are paid the higher of the federal or state/local minimum wage.
  • Placement Sites: In addition to on-campus roles, students have recently been placed at the Portland and Vancouver VA Health Administration campuses in fields such as healthcare, finance, and information technology.

Get connected

Get dialed in with veterans active on campus. The Veterans Club holds events throughout the year, including recreation activities and opportunities to network, volunteer and build comradery.

Veteran supportive campus

WSU Vancouver is a veteran supportive campus, as designated by the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs. The following resources are available for military-connected students:

  • Veterans Coordinator: The primary contact at the university for everything related to Veterans Affairs.
  • New Coug Orientation: An opportunity to learn about VA educational benefits, resources, and meet other military-connected students on campus.
  • Tuition Waivers: Washington residents with an honorable discharge may qualify for partial tuition waivers.
  • Student Accommodations & Disability Resources: Services and accommodations for qualified students with disabilities, psychological or medical conditions, or temporary injuries that limit access to school.
  • Counseling Services: Individual, group, and crisis counseling, and psychological testing.
  • Health Services: Basic health care services such as treatment of acute illness and injuries, physical exams, immunizations, medication evaluations, and prescriptions.
  • Free Tutoring: Available for students receiving VA educational benefits to support academic success.
  • Paid VA Work-Study Positions: Earn tax-exempt income while gaining professional experience in veteran-focused roles.
