Minor in English

Advance Your Communication and Analytical Skills

An English minor provides the flexibility to shape an academic career in line with your professional and personal interests. Students who pursue studies with WSU Vancouver gain a broad education emphasizing language and literature. This curriculum builds a foundational background for those who want to teach, prepare for graduate studies, or enter professional fields.

About the Major

The program requires students to complete a minimum of 18 hours in English courses, excluding 101 and 198. Half of these hours must be 300-400-level credits earned in WSU courses or through WSU-approved education abroad or educational exchange courses. Students must complete the required ENGLISH 302 course. Coursework covers early and contemporary American and British literature, Shakespeare, global and postcolonial literature, and African American, Native American, and Asian American literature. Students also explore critical literary, race, gender, postcolonial, and cultural theory, alongside documentary film theory and production, teaching methods, and writing. Studies can be enhanced with complementary coursework in professional writing, creative writing, digital technology and culture, women’s studies, film studies, ethnic studies, American studies, and social and environmental justice.
