Environmental Health and Safety

Protecting Our Campus Community

WSU Vancouver is dedicated to maintaining a secure and sustainable environment for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Under the direction of Facilities Operations, the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) team manages comprehensive programs to mitigate workplace hazards, ensure regulatory compliance, and preserve the natural beauty of our campus. By integrating safety protocols into daily operations, WSU Vancouver fosters a culture of well-being and environmental stewardship.

Our office serves as a central resource for occupational safety, waste management, and environmental protection. Whether you are seeking required employee training, navigating stormwater management guidelines, or coordinating the disposal of hazardous materials, EHS provides the expertise and support necessary to uphold university standards. We collaborate across departments to resolve health concerns and protect the integrity of our surrounding ecosystem.

Mission and Goals

The primary mission of Environmental Health and Safety is to protect the well-being of the campus community and the surrounding environment. We achieve this by designing rigorous policies, monitoring compliance, and enlisting every community member as a partner in safety.

Our Core Objectives:

  • Minimize health risks from chemical, physical, or occupational exposure.
  • Safeguard the WSU Vancouver community through continuous program improvements.
  • Resolve safety concerns through active participation in safety committees.
  • Manage hazardous substances to protect both persons and property.
  • Liaison with state and local authorities to ensure full regulatory compliance.

Stormwater Management

WSU Vancouver strives to reduce non-point source pollutants to the maximum extent possible to protect local water quality. Our program follows the Western Washington Phase II Municipal Stormwater Permit requirements. We invite the public to review our program and submit comments via email to van.ehs@wsu.edu.

Accident Prevention Program

This program identifies, evaluates, and eliminates potential hazards to maintain a work environment free from recognized risks. Safety is a cooperative effort between management and employees, integrating health measures into every task.

Program Appendices:

Required Employee Safety Training

In compliance with state regulations, all employees must receive safety training. This is required on the first day of employment, when job duties change, or as a refresher every two years. New employees must complete a safety orientation to understand the specific hazards of their work area.

Dangerous Waste Collection

WSU Vancouver utilizes a digital Chemical Collection Request (CCR) system for the disposal of hazardous materials, including chemicals, lights, and batteries.

Submission Guidelines:

  1. Labeling: Apply a Dangerous Waste Label as soon as you begin adding waste to a container.
  2. Tracking: Maintain a record of all constituents to report accurate percentages.
  3. Requests: Submit a digital request at ehs.fais.wsu.edu once the container is full.
  4. Documentation: Print the generated label and attach it firmly to the container.

Required Information for CCR:

  • Contact Details: Name, phone, and WSU email of the person responsible for the waste.
  • Location: Building and room number where the waste is stored.
  • Constituents: Full names of all chemicals and their percentages (totaling 100%).
  • Hazards: Identify the primary hazard, such as toxicity or flammability.
