Celebrating 30 years of creativity

The Washington State University Vancouver Department of Art will celebrate a major milestone this spring with a vibrant, campus-wide exhibition marking three decades of student creativity.

The 30th Annual Student Art Exhibition and Alumni Showcase opens April 22, bringing together current students and alumni in a dynamic reflection of the program’s past, present and future.

For art students, the annual exhibition represents the culmination of months often years of creative exploration. From concept to completion, many of the works on display have been developed over the academic year, offering visitors a glimpse into the depth and diversity of artistic practice at WSU Vancouver. Student artwork will remain on display throughout the summer, extending the celebration well beyond opening day.

“This exhibition is a living archive of curiosity and courage,” said Professor of Art Avantika Bawa. “Each piece carries a trace of inquiry of looking closely, of taking risks, of imagining otherwise. When alumni return to share their journeys, those traces expand, reminding us that art doesn’t end at graduation it continues to shape how we see, think and move through the world.”

In honor of the 30th anniversary, alumni were invited to participate in a special showcase alongside current students. Whether they pursued art as a minor or simply took a class that left a lasting impression, alumni contributors share not only their artwork but also reflections on how creativity continues to shape their lives and careers.

Their stories highlight the lasting impact of artistic thinking well beyond the studio demonstrating how skills like observation, problem-solving and innovation translate across professions and industries.

The celebration begins at 1 p.m. in the Dengerink Administration Building Gallery, with opening remarks at 1:30 p.m. Guests are then invited to explore installations across campus, including the Science and Engineering Building, the library and the Quad. Throughout the afternoon, students, faculty, staff and alumni will be on hand to discuss their work and creative journeys.

As the Department of Art marks 30 years of exhibitions, the showcase serves as both a milestone and a moment of momentum celebrating a legacy of creativity while looking ahead to the next generation of artists.
