Psychiatric disabilities

Academic Support for Mental Health and Wellness

Psychological and psychiatric disabilities involve impairments in cognitive, educational, or social functioning. These conditions, as defined by the American Psychiatric Diagnostic Statistical Manual, can impact a student’s ability to engage fully with their coursework and campus life. At WSU Vancouver, we prioritize mental health as a vital component of student success, offering resources to help students manage the unique demands of a higher education environment while navigating these challenges.

Student Accommodations and Disability Resources works to remove barriers related to focus, time management, and social interaction. Whether a condition is persistent or episodic, WSU Vancouver provides a collaborative framework to ensure students receive the necessary adjustments. Our office acts as a partner in your academic journey, helping to translate clinical needs into practical classroom supports.

Documentation Requirements

To initiate services, please have a qualified healthcare provider submit the following details to Student Accommodations and Disability Resources. You may also utilize the Provider Verification Form (PDF) for this purpose. Documentation must demonstrate the current impact of the condition.

Documentation must include:

  • Details regarding the nature, severity, and anticipated duration of the disability.
  • An assessment of your current ability to function in a college environment, specifically regarding focus, information retention, time management, and group work.
  • For episodic conditions, information on triggers, warning symptoms, frequency of episodes, and a management care plan.
  • Any side effects of medication that may influence physical, behavioral, or cognitive performance in a postsecondary setting.
  • A description of the expected progression or stability of the disability over time.
  • Optional: Recommendations for academic adjustments or auxiliary aids supported by clinical evidence.

Please note that WSU Vancouver Student Accommodations and Disability Resources makes the final determination regarding the implementation of specific academic adjustments.
