The Department of English at WSU Vancouver provides a vibrant intellectual community where students explore the human experience through literature, culture and professional communication. By focusing on critical inquiry and advanced text creation, the department prepares students to navigate and shape a rapidly changing global landscape. Our coursework emphasizes how language influences public life, giving you the analytical tools to understand diverse cultural viewpoints and the creative freedom to develop your unique voice.

As an English student, you will work closely with dedicated faculty in small, discussion-driven classes and collaborative writing environments. You will build highly adaptable skills in creative writing, literary analysis, and professional or technical communication. Coursework Areas

Courses cover foundational and specialized areas including early and contemporary American and British literature; Shakespeare; global and postcolonial literature; African American, Native American and Asian American literature; critical literary, race, gender, postcolonial and cultural theory; documentary film theory and production; and teaching methods and writing.

You can enhance your academic experience with coursework from complementary programs in professional writing, creative writing, digital technology and culture, women studies, film studies, ethnic studies, American studies, and social and environmental justice.
