Educational credentials for international students

Admissions requirements and credential guidelines

WSU Vancouver welcomes students from across the globe to join a diverse academic community. To ensure a smooth transition, international applicants must meet specific academic standards based on their previous education. Whether you are finishing high school or transferring from another university, providing verified educational credentials is a vital step in the application process.

Navigating international admissions requires a clear understanding of grade-point average expectations and documentation. WSU Vancouver evaluates each applicant’s background to ensure they are prepared for the rigors of our curriculum. By following the guidelines for secondary school completion and post-secondary transfers, you can begin your journey toward a world-class degree.

Secondary school

International applicants must complete at least 12 years of elementary through secondary education. This should culminate in an appropriate secondary certificate or external examination. A successful applicant typically demonstrates:

  • An unweighted grade-point average (GPA) of at least 2.7 on a 4.0 scale.
  • A balanced curriculum including humanities, mathematics, basic sciences, and social sciences.

In certain educational systems, the first or second year of university study may be classified as secondary level education.

College or university transfer

Students moving from a recognized or accredited post-secondary institution must meet specific transfer criteria. Applicants are required to have:

  • At least one full year of completed study.
  • An unweighted GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Transferring from a U.S. institution

If you are currently attending a school within the United States, follow these steps after submitting your application, accepting your offer, and paying your tuition deposit:

  1. Download and complete the transfer documentation.
  2. Submit the form to facilitate your immigration status update.

Credential Evaluation

If your college or university education was completed outside of the United States at an institution without U.S. regional accreditation, you must have your transcripts evaluated. This process converts your academic records to the U.S. grading system and provides a cumulative unweighted grade-point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale.

Provide official academic transcripts

Submit complete, official academic transcripts from all secondary and post-secondary schools you have attended to Washington State University. These documents must detail all courses taken, grades received, and any degrees or certificates earned.

WSU International Admissions will complete this evaluation once your official transcripts are received.

Third-party credential evaluation service

As an alternative to the internal review, you may use an approved third-party service to evaluate your credentials. Common providers include World Education Services (WES) and Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE).

A list of all acceptable credential evaluation companies is available on the NACES website. WSU only accepts evaluations performed by NACES-approved companies.

Request the correct evaluation

To ensure your application is processed efficiently, please request the specific evaluation type required for your student status:

  • First-year students: If you have only attended secondary school, request an evaluation that includes a cumulative unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Transfer students: If you have completed college or university coursework, request a detailed course-by-course transcript evaluation. Applicants with less than one year of post-secondary work must also have their secondary school transcripts evaluated.
