Strengthening Democracy Through Collaborative Dialogue
The Initiative for Public Deliberation at WSU Vancouver serves as a vital impartial resource for Southwest Washington. By replacing rigid partisanship with active listening and meaningful conversation, the program assists in community problem-solving through issue analysis and public participation events. This collaborative effort between the Foley Institute for Public Policy and Public Service and local institutions helps design forums where participants address complex regional challenges in a safe, structured environment.
Students lead the work of the initiative, gaining essential skills in facilitation, community organizing, and meeting design. As colleagues and collaborators, student associates take on significant responsibilities while working alongside local government, school districts, and community organizations. This experiential learning environment prepares participants to guide the deliberative process and foster civic engagement across a wide range of professional contexts.
Community Partnerships
Collaborative relationships with regional organizations are central to the mission. The initiative works with several key partners to foster civic dialogue:
- Fort Vancouver Regional Library: Collaborative production of the Forum at the Library, a recurring program engaging the community on topics such as housing and criminal justice.
- Regional Economic and Civic Groups: Ongoing work with the Community Foundation, Identity Clark County, and the Columbia River Economic Development Council to address affordable housing and economic growth.
- Youth Outreach: Partnership with the YMCA to host conferences for high school student leaders, providing them with the facilitation techniques necessary to achieve democratic ideals.
